Dr Geoff Lyons

I am a Clinical Psychologist and Senior Lecturer of Clinical Psychology. I am also a certified Couples Counselor,  a Yoga teacher, and energetic and shamanic healer.

I have specialisations in men’s mental health (e.g. depression, fatherhood, substance use, gambling, pornography); cancer, palliative care and grief; anxiety disorders; and marriage counselling. I also have a specific interest and specialisation in things that are “alternative”, such as spirituality and the healing power of nature. I am nonetheless a professional and well-grounded clinical psychologist focused on providing clients with high-quality evidence-based mental health care.

Inspirit Psychology Geoff Lyons Sutherland Shire

I have worked at various universities in Sydney teaching psychology and currently hold a full-time position as a Senior Lecturer of Clinical Psychology and Director of Postgraduate Professional Psychology Programs at a major tertiary institution in Sydney. In this role I am in charge of training postgraduate students to become psychologists and clinical psychologists. In short, I lead a team of professionals teaching people how to be psychologists.

Research is an essential part of any academic career. My research is primarily focused on the use of complementary therapies in mental health and wellbeing (e.g. using things like Yoga and tai chi for wellbeing). But I also have research interests in the psychology of spirituality and also in substance use disorders. As a psychologist I am ethically bound to gather evidence on any alternative treatments I am using in addition to my standard evidence-based practices. Therefore I may invite people who receive any complementary therapies from me to participate in my research on these topics. I also frequently go “into the field” to research the mental health care work being done by other complementary therapists in our communities.

I’m a little different from your average therapist. I have the specialist skills found in all clinical psychologists but also a few skills and interests that are unique. I work with all people to provide well-grounded, open-minded and highly skilled professional support.

I provide services to adults and couples for most common mental health issues. I regularly see clients in the afternoon and evenings and also during the day on Saturdays. I can be contacted at geoff@inspiritpsychology.com.au.
